Richard Salmen

Welcome. I believe it’s time money made sense.

In a time of complex questions and multiple headlines, you may be asking “What is financial planning, really?” This year, our team at Family Investment Center answers this simply:  It’s helping people use their money effectively to make their lives better.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, the Family Investment Center team is applying this philosophy through the addition of professional financial planning services. As a a CFP®, CFA and EA, I’m thrilled to be leading this charge from the Family Investment Center office in Lenexa, Kan.

My name is known nationally in the financial planning profession, with positions including past national President of the Financial Planning Association and as the 2018 Chairman of the CFP® Board national board of directors. For 16 years, I led the financial planning practice of BOK Financial Corp/GTrust.

I’m also a retired air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration and spent 14 years as a member of the Army Reserves, finishing my career at the rank of Captain.

Truly, my greatest adventure will be seeing you do more of what you love. Isn’t that what money is all about?

About Me:

As of Jan. 1, 2018, I’m the President of Family Investment Center.
I’ll lead the financial planning services from the Lenexa, Kan., office.

My credentials include  CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® Professional and a Certified Trust & Financial Advisor (CTFA).  I received the CFA Institute Board of Governors Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) charter.  As an Enrolled Agent (EA), I’m authorized to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service at all levels.

My previous experience includes serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Northern Financial Advisors, a Detroit, MI fee only financial planning and investment management firm. For 16 years, I served in a top leadership position at BOK Financial Corp/GTrust, overseeing the firm’s financial planning practice.

I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and was a graduate business scholar while receiving my Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Kansas.

In 2006, I began a three-year term as a member of the national board of directors for the Financial Planning Association (FPA) based in Denver, Colorado, ultimately serving as national President in 2009.  In 2010, I served as FPA national Chairman.  In November 2014 I was elected to serve a four year term on the Board of Directors for the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc., beginning January 1, 2015.  Within this term, I was elected by the Board of Directors to serve as Chair-Elect of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. for 2017. I’m proud to serve as 2018 Chair of CFP® Board’s Board of Directors.

Additional career milestones have taken me overseas. I co-chaired the international People-to-People tour of financial planners to China during 2011 and chaired a similar trip to India in November 2013.  I was one of 40 participants for the 2012 class of Leadership Kansas, and selected as the 2014-15 Executive-in-Residence for my alma mater, the University of Nebraska – Kearney.

In 2016, I was recognized as a recipient of the 2016 Heart of Financial Planning award.  The Heart of Financial Planning Award recognizes individual professionals, financial planning firms, and organizations that engage in extraordinary work, contributing and giving back to the planning community and public through financial planning. Recipients embody the spirit of financial planning and also represent FPA’s Core Values.

As a side note, I’m a retired air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration and I spent 14 years as a member of the Army Reserves, finishing my career at the rank of Captain. Recenly, the KC Business Journal posted another article: “Salmen gets back into financial planning business in KC.”

As things change in the markets, and they naturally will, it’s my goal to see you have confidence in your future and your plans. I encourage you to take a moment to listen to this Feb. 2018 interview with NPR on “All Things Considered” as an additional introduction to my philosophy. The article is called “How Consumers Should Approach a Volatile Stock Market,” and it aired nationwide in response to market dips.

Today, the milestone I’m most looking forward to is serving you as your financial planner. Ultimately, I want to help you understand your money — and yourself — even better. This means you can enjoy more of what you love. This year, I’m here to help you “make money make sense.” Let’s get started.
